Blood Clot In Leg

Treating Pulmonary Embolism Or PE (Blood Clot In Lungs)

: Blood Clot In Leg

Blood clot in one of the lung arteries can be fatal. Treatments for pulmonary embolism (PE) are aimed at preventing the formation of a new blood clot and stop the existing one from enlarging.

Follow these steps to treat the blood clot in

Step 1

Hospitalize all patients.

Step 2

Administer anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as intravenous heparin, lovenox. Medications that actually dissolve the clot are called thrombolytics should be reserved for serious cases.

Step 3

After the IV therapy is initiated start oral Warfarin (Coumadin). Patient may need to take this for at least three months after his discharge from the hospital.

Step 4

If the source of the blood clot is the veins of the lower limbs a filter (Inferior vena cava or IVC filter) may be placed in the big vein of the abdomen. This filter traps clots before they could enter in to the lung arteries after passing through heart. An IVC filter is often recommended in patients who cannot use anticoagulants because of recent surgery, a hemorrhagic stroke, bleeding in another area of the body, etc

Step 5

Surgical removal of the clot called Embolectomy may be performed either by using catheters or with an open surgical procedures if thrombolytic therapy fails or is contraindicated.

Tips & Warnings People who take warfarin should wear a bracelet alert. Patients with PE are at an increased risk for developing another PE. Therefore, watch for signs of a new PE, such as new chest pain, difficulty breathing, a rapid heart rate, or lightheadedness. Patients taking anticoagulants are at a risk of bleeding from gut, urine and other organs. A health care provider should be notified immediately if this happens.

Is this a Heart problem or some other health problem?
I have ask a couple times on here and only looking for people that might have the same problem or health issue or someone that might know something about this. I have been having problems breathing and problems getting faint since January. I have been to the doctors and she has told me as of last week I have been tested for everything she can test me for. On March 15th I did have a small heart attack and had a stent put in. I had 70% blockage in my artery. After the stent my blood pressure is stabilized now and not jumping around. My breathing problem is still there and feeling as it is getting worse. I also and getting very tired fast. Some days with in a couple hours I am so tired I could pass out standing up. I feel warn out and I feel like I'm not getting enough air. I have been to the ER and follow up after follow up with my family doctor. She has tested everything. Lungs are fine, Anxiety disorder not it, Thyroid fine, Blood clots in legs and lungs was not able to find any, They did a second heart cath to check the stent and it is fine. I have followed up with my Heart doctor, What a waste of time. (Need any meds refilled, no ok see you in a year) I was explaining my problems and he would not listen. Yes I am looking for a new heart doctor. So what i'm looking for is, does anyone or know is this a heart issue or something else? My family doctor thinks it is. I feel as I am not getting enough air, short of breath after just sitting up and tired all the time now. I just exhausted. Have checked Oxygen level by finger resting and walking was 100%. They have checked blood pressure going for sitting to standing. That was all fine. My biggest pain in the feeling of shortness of breath since January. I noticed on days when i bend over and stand back up, I am short of breath and feel faint. Bending over is a problem. Also taste like blood but not spitting it up. ER Doctor told me it is the metallic taste from meds. But it's not all the time. Mostly when I am really having troubles breathing or coughing. Been tested for diabetes. All good. Was a non-smoker, PFT was fine, chest x-ray were all fine, ultra sound of the heart looking for fluid they said that was good, 70% blood clot in coronary artery, Stent in place now, did walk for more then 6 minutes with probe on. I have been poked and poked and poked and poked again looking for the problem. The problem seems to be getting worse, but the answers & questions I am getting will help me talk to my doctor. forgot to mention the 2d echo was done too. I'm 34 Yrs old - Non-smoker Non-drinker and no drugs.
